Another great video by Gary Wilson, author of “Your Brain On Porn” series. This time he presented at TED Talks and the title of this presentation is “The Great Porn Experiment”
Like all other Gary’s work, this video is great and I highly recommend it.

Yeah that’s awesome, wish more people could hear about this. Porn is such a problem today with both men and women. I am still struggling with my addiction to porn pictures and videos. Glad that I was lead to this video.
ED is not the only reason to stop pornography. As the third column of the recovery plan will tell you (if you gave it enough thought) the reasons are manifold. I encourage people think of reasons that don’t just focus on what the user will ‘get’ if they quit.
A few things turned me off about this talk. 1) use of phrases like “hot babes” puts out a ‘boys will be boy’s’ attitude 2) imagery and talk implying that guys are supposed to ‘get’ girls as if girls are just waiting to be ‘gotten’ 3) the audience laughing at the question ‘why would any man in their right mind want to give up porn’ and Gary’s response that focused only on benefits for these men (which happens to be penis centric).
That being said, something is better than nothing. I’m glad Gary made this, and I understand that effective speeches need to be narrowly focused. I was just turned off that that the main reason given to quit porn is ED (or totally male centric).
Yes, indeed!
While the speaker does give us some useful science behind the cycles of addiction and its effects on the brain, his talk paints men as helpless victims to their whims — which I find offensive. There’s a lot more going on than just a starved brain needing more chemical. He says nothing about what drives people to lives of insulated introversion (of which, porn addiction could be called a symptom — one of many).
Just as the speaker assumes obesity is all about binge eating of junk food, he ignores the complexity of the issues, and the nuances that drive people back to it in the first place. Sure, it is an easy habit to follow and a hard habit to break, but it weakens the argument when we ask others to assume that we suffer or act in the same way.
I wish we would talk more about underlying issues, because this is where the “cure” for these ills truly lies. Men and women relating to each other. Real conversations. Open dialogue in person. Stimulation of the brain in other ways besides fantasy.
I do not fully agree. I believe the speaker was attempting to reach a group of people desensitized by porn. To joke about it was his attempt to echo what goes through most men’s mind and relieve tension. Mentioning primarily ED is something *every* man, no matter their place of addiction can relate to and will make them take heed of his finding. I appreciated that he then followed it up with real life testaments showing the vast benefits that can also be found and are not *scientifically* proven yet. ED has been. He was giving a professional and factual speech, not a revival or emotional plea.
This is GREAT. All my questions answered. For years, decades actually, I have never felt a connection with another human being. Finally, I know why. Simply put – because I am not a human being. I am an addict. I’m quitting. I want my life back. I want my feelings and emotions back. I want to live like a human being again. Thanks so much.
