Depression in Teenagers: Using Porn Addiction as an Escape

Guest post by Denny Dew, author of http://depressionteenshelp.com/

Depression in teenagers is a growing problem. After my episode of depression I began to learn about this subject because I think that depressed teenagers are the victims of a culture becoming less human every day.

In this article I want to talk about one of the possible symptoms of depression, porn addiction. The strong feelings produced by the addiction may be needed to compensate the feelings of despair and hopelessness typical of depression.

Addiction as an escape

I have been depressed, I know that it hurts. It hurts very badly and you want to stop it in any available way.

There are many things that give pleasure, and pleasure is comforting. It gives strong and gratifying feelings that make you forget for a while the desperation  inflicted by depression.

Alcohol, smoke, porn, drugs all give strong feelings that will make you forget your desperation simply because they will hold your attention completely, taking it away from your painful thoughts.

If you are depressed, your thoughts hurt so much that it’s hard to take your attention away from them. You need something powerful like porn stuff. Drugs may be even stronger.

It is best, however, to understand where your hurting thoughts are coming from because you’ll wash them away once and for all.

Is it a Solution if We Make Teens Feel Guilty?

In order to make someone stop his porn addiction the idea might be to judge him or her very negatively.

Parents, educators and the public can be very judgmental and scary if they play their moralising attitude ardently.

If you are a depressed teenager using porn addiction to escape your depression, people around you can make you feel very scared and guilty. They make you think that you are a very bad guy if you watch that rubbish.

Actually, you are doing something helpful. You are escaping the awful feelings depression produces in you. If you don’t do this, these terrible feelings might take you to the verge of suicide, which is far worse than suicide. Please worry less about quitting porn until you find help for your depression.

But, anyway, do judgments and moralising help? Judgments and moralising are violence. How can violence help a depressed teenager? I can’t see how. A depressed teenager is already violent. He his violent against himself. He is busy hurting himself with painful feelings, the ones his depression gives him.

To judge a depressed teenager negatively is like to try to extinguish a fire by pouring petrol over it.

Let’s introduce a glimpse of the true solution. Let’s imagine that trust in oneself is something nearer to the true solution than the violence of moralising.

Food and trust or trust and food?

We need food to live, don’t we? And trust in ourselves too. Is food more important than trust or trust than food?

I can imagine you saying that food is more important. Actually trust in oneself is. Let’s see why.

Humans are a particular kind of animal. When an animal falls asleep at night, it doesn’t need any trust in itself. Its instinct will do the job. Humans though have a mind of infinite possibilities.

In the case of falling asleep, humans may end up having difficulties, not sleeping all night, sleeping too much or having a troubled sleep.

What make humans have a good sleep is trust in themselves. The trust that they will be able to find the right possibility among the infinite choices they have.

Animals don’t have this problem, but it’s also true that they can’t enjoy the opportunities that this richness of possibilities gives us.

Back to food: if an animal has food available and it’s hungry, its instinct will do the job. It will eat. Humans won’t if they lack trust in themselves. They will end up having difficulties eating, not eating at all, eating too much and damaging their health, and so on.

Human beings that have a lot of food available but lack trust in themselves are at risk of starvation. For this reason trust is more important than food for humans.

What happens in serious cases of depression in teenagers is precisely that the depressed teenager loses the trust in himself he needs to live and therefore contemplates suicide.

Happily a lot can be done to restore that lost trust.

Depression in teenagers is a message that asks us to stop denying teenagers trust.
