Welcome, Newlife.
I was in active addiction for about 12 years, but I talk to many people at SAA meetings who were there for 20, 30, even 40 years. There's no rule about how long it will take to reset the pathways in your brain; it differs greatly from person to person based on too many factors to even mention. The good news is that if you are serious about recovery, you CAN change. You've taken the first step by posting here. I'd recommend taking Alex's recovery course on the main site, and checking out a few SAA meetings in person if there are any in your area, or telephone / internet meetings if there aren't. The most important thing is to be honest and put more effort into recovery than you did into your addiction. Keep coming back.
Your friend, Absolution.
